  • Karan Johar is the son of well-known producer the late Yash Johar. A director, producer, writer, TV celebrity, and even costume designer, Johar attended the Greenlawns High school and later HR College in Mumbai.

     

    His production company is Dharma Productions which was set up by his father.Influenced by commercial Bollywood cinema as a child, Karan made his entry into the film industry as an actor. He played the role of Shah Rukh Khan’s best friend in the 1995 blockbuster 'Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge'. He was also the assistant director for the film and helped Aditya Chopra in writing the screenplay. SRK’s costumes in the film were handled by Karan Johar.

     

    He made his directorial debut with 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' in the year 1998 starring Shah Rukh, Kajol, Rani Mukerji and Salman Khan. This film was a major box office hit and won eight Filmfare awards – Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Actress as well as Best Supporting Actor and Actress.His second film as a director was the multistarrer 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham' in 2001. This film also went on to win 5 Filmfare Awards. In 2003 he wrote and produced the hugely successful 'Kal Ho Naa Ho' directed by Nikhil Advani who was Karan’s assistant director in 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai'.

     

    In 2005, after a four-year long break, Karan started working on his third film as a director, 'Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna'. The film released on August 11, 2006. Johar became a common face on TV with his celebrity talk show, 'Koffee With Karan' on Star World. The show began in 2004 with its first season. The second season went on air in February 2007. On September 30, 2006, Johar became the first Indian filmmaker to be a jury member at the Miss World Pageant held in Warsaw, Poland. He was also chosen as one of the 250 Global Young Leaders by the Geneva based World Economic Forum.He directed his fourth movie named 'My Name Is Khan' starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in 2010.He also hosted the different seasons of show 'Jhalak Dikhlaja' on Colors.

     

    Currently he is one of the judges for the reality show - India's Got Talent 7 on Colors. He has previously been a judge for season 4, 5 and 6 too.
